The Biennial International Pediatric Oncology Congress
In memory of Prof. Vossough
Prof. Parvaneh Vossough, a pioneer of modern pediatric hematology and oncology in Iran, was one of the foremost global authorities in pediatric oncology as well as the chairwoman of MAHAK’s Board of Trustees. She devoted her entire life voluntarily to those in need of her knowledge, experience, and guidance.
Prof. Parvaneh Vossough, was born in 1935 in Tafresh. She joined the faculty of Medicine of Tehran University in 1961 where she received a doctorate in medicine. Subsequently, she completed her specialization in Pediatric Oncology at the Medical Sciences Department of the University of Illinois from 1962 to 1964.
She studied medicine at Tehran University and completed her internship and pediatric residency at renowned medical centers in the USA. Afterwards, she moved to Washington D.C. where she completed her fellowship program in pediatric hematology and oncology field at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Thereafter, she was appointed as attending pediatric oncologist at M.D. Anderson Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
Her relationship with MAHAK started from the very beginning, initially as a volunteer associate director. After her formal retirement, she became the chairperson of MAHAK’s Board of Trustees and later, she presumed the additional responsibility of becoming the chief physician of MAHAK hospital.
Prof. Vossough was an active member of various medical societies including the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP), the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) and the Middle East Children’s Cancer Alliance (MECCA).
Prof. Vossough as an esteemed professor published over hundreds of articles in reputable national and international scientific journals. Professor Vossough treated countless children from all over Iran and the world. She trained many specialists in the field of pediatric hematology and oncology, who are now among the top physicians, clinicians, and surgeons in prestigious medical centers worldwide.
Prof. Vossough's efforts in foundation of the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology ward in Ali-Asghar Hospital led to establish similar departments across Iran hospitals. This outcome was groundbreaking and one of her greatest successful achievements in childhood cancer treatment, leaving a unique legacy.
Prof. Parvaneh Vossough passed away on May 19, 2013, at the age of 78. But for us, there is no goodbye, as she will always be in our hearts. Today, on May 19, we commemorate her efforts and commitment. May her memory and her fulfilling life of humanitarian devotion keep us inspired to carry on our mission to support children suffering from cancer.
